It was a tremendous asset to the making of this film. By "spirits", they meant not only their dead relatives, but also the spirits that they believed inhabited the trees, rocks, and water around them. Jochanan ben Zaccai is by his disciples,"the lamp of the world" o : and it was usual for the head of a school, or of an university to be styled p"the light of the world"; but this title much better agrees and suits with the persons Christ gives it to, who, no question, had a view to those exalted characters the Jews gave to their celebrated Rabbins. Nothing so hopeless as apostate discipleship with a bright past behind it to which it has become dead—begun in the spirit, ending in the flesh.

There is a true gradation in the thought of influence. What imagery was Jesus evoking? Religion and Colonial Writing Early Colonial writers spoke of transforming the landscape and its people. Conjectures have been made whether any one city can reasonably be mentioned as being in sight, and so having suggested this image to our Lord. Many of famous preachers and churches will be familiar to those of us who enjoy history: John Winthrop, Jonathan Edwards, Anne This is an excellent book about the religious history of the United States, and about how--for the vast majority of our history--the sermon served as a political, cultural, and social force in America.

With these high ideals ever in their minds, much of the writings of this period consisted of letters, journals, narratives, and histories - highly influenced as they were by British writers. Safed, some twelve miles north-west of Capernaum, the view from which extends to Tiberias Neubaur, 'Geogr. Likewise, it was the 'social Gospel'--what some have labeled the Third Great Awakening--that led to the Progressive Period in the later part of the 19th century. This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering— Sepphoris was the center of government selected by Herod Antipas for the district of Galilee after his father, Herod the Great, died. What I found especially fascinating was learning about how sermons served such an important political function, especially during the first half of America's history.

A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid — As if he had said, If you do not hide this light from mankind, but cause it to shine forth in your doctrine and practice, it will be so clear and resplendent as not possibly to be hid, any more than a city set on a hill.

The term light is often applied to religious teachers. It is pre-eminently applied to Jesus in these places, because he is, in the moral world, what the sun is in the natural world. Thomson The Land and the Book, vol.
